Applied Data Science Overview

Data science is an emerging field that blends computer technology, statistics, and business to manage, organize, and analyze the massive amounts of data produced by modern technologies every day. Digitalized data make it easier than ever to conduct research on historical records, providing connections between the old and new. Data scientists need to understand information systems and have a strong foundation in analytical methods and tools. Employers are increasingly looking for these skills to help solve important problems and create new insights in industry, healthcare, government, non-profits, and beyond.

In just about every field, including business, there is a large and growing need for people with the knowledge and skills to clean, manipulate, and analyze data, and then report the results to inform better decision-making. The data science analytics major at Chatham is a comprehensive and rigorous program that prepares students to successfully meet this need and pursue rewarding careers in the burgeoning field of data analytics.

Explore the Applied Data Science Analytics Degree:

Choose a minor in a specialized knowledge domain, such as another business field, political science, sustainability, biology, psychology, mathematics, or more.
Take classes at Carnegie Mellon University or the University of Pittsburgh through our agreements with those schools.
Benefit from innovative courses such as Information and Cybersecurity, which teaches students to identify vulnerabilities, assess threats, and analyze risk. In Introduction to Data Science, students examine how digital technologies are transforming industries such as business, music, and healthcare.
You will leave Chatham fully prepared, thanks to professional development in in-demand business areas such as project management, Six Sigma, and coding, as well as the individualized attention of and experience conveyed by our faculty.

Database Management Systems

This course is a study of database management systems and their applications to a wide range of information processing needs. Students design and implement database management systems while being introduced to a conceptual model of a database environment comprised of five basic components: databases, database management systems, data dictionary/directory systems, database administration, and user-system interfaces.

Data Visualization and Communication

This course covers the different ways of visualizing data, given different types and characteristics of data. Includes assessment and evaluation of existing data visualization techniques. Current tools used to transform data and visualize data are reviewed, including Python, Google Charts, and Tableau.

Machine Learning and AI

An introduction to machine learning and algorithms. Topics include least squares methods, Gaussian distributions, linear classification, linear regression, maximum likelihood, exponential family distributions, Bayesian networks, Bayesian inference, graphical models, hidden Markov models, support vector machines, and kernel methods. Includes current issues relevant to big data problems.

The Center for Women's Entrepreneurship connects students with area business leaders and promotes events on campus, such as the Think Big Forum, a series of panel discussions focusing on strategic business growth, entrepreneurship, leadership, and sustainability.

Chatham has an active MIS/Analytics Club which provides professional development, networking opportunities, and social events. The MIS/Analytics Club received the outstanding new student organization award in 2019.

School Mission

The School of Business & Enterprise teaches students the fundamentals of business practice through learning and applying academic content, practicing business skills, and evaluating the context of business decision-making. The School integrates material and programming incorporating the University’s mission in global understanding and environmental responsibility and prepares students to work as leaders in professional and civic arenas. Through student-centered curricular and co-curricular offerings, the School assists students to reach their full potential in the business world.

A Look at the Award-Winning Chatham Women's Business Center

Chatham’s Women’s Business Center (CWBC), part of the Center for Women’s Entrepreneurship at Chatham University (CWE), was selected by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) as the 2018 Women’s Business Center of the Year.

Panel on Robotics and Artificial Intelligence

In September 2018, Chatham hosted a speaker panel on robotics and artificial intelligence for the financial and accounting industries. Speakers come from Schneider Downs, PNC, and Cognistx.
